Ron Paul: Rebel or Spoiler? (Phillips Nation)

What problems will Ron Paul and his Band of Crusaders create for the Republican party as they hold their impromptu "Rally for The Republic" in Minneapolis August 31 through September 2? What is wrong with holding a rally you say? After all, it still is a free country. While I agree it is certainly within Dr. Paul's rights to hold this rally, my question is this. Just what does Dr. Paul and his loyal band of followers hope to accomplish with this venture?

What is the purpose of the Rally for the Republic? Is it to bring awareness to the American people about our imperfect system of government. Is it to highlight how are nation is being controlled and in some cases hijacked by an even less perfect group of representatives and their special interests? Is it to warn the average everyday citizen that our current Congress is failing at their sworn duties? Granted, the attitude of the American public can at times be somewhat lethargic without ample provocation. But, the The American people are not oblivious to the problems that face us. This is evidenced by the fact that Congress has some of the worst favorability ratings in the history of the Republic. When change is necessary, it will come. Most Americans are not confused about whether change is needed in our country. The question they struggle with is how to bring about change in the most meaningful and impactful manner. It is not enough to just highlight the faults and failures of the nation; one must offer substantive solutions to correct those problems.

Perphaps the reason for the Rally for the Republic is to call for an immediate end to the war in Iraq. After all, America has sacrificed greatly in both blood and treasure, maybe too greatly. During the primaries, Dr. Paul often referred to the Iraq War as an illegal action. Although Dr. Paul disagreed with every premise for entering the war, his statement is just not true. A majority of Democrats and Republicans voted in Congress to approve and fund this war. Now, the President and Congress will bear the ultimate responsiblity for its outcome. As much as many Democrats would like to complain and attempt to shift the blame for the war solely to President Bush, the reality is that they too must be responsible for their initial decision to begin the war. They too must live with the fact that they have not been willing to end this war by defunding it. Only the sick and demented pleasure in war. Nobody wants to be in conflict forever. But now that our all-volunteer army is fighting and winning this war, we cannot abandon them before they are victorious.
